Over the last few months, I have to admit I’ve not been overly loving of my body, eating foods that aren’t that good for me, not exercising enough, and just not taking much care of myself at all.
I’m sure this is a common pattern for all of us, and it’s easy to get caught in the spiral, which continues to take us on this journey to “feeling fat and sluggish”. Ugh!
What many people don’t realise, is that our food intake and the amount we exercise, plays a huge part in our mental health as well as our physical health, and many people find themselves heading towards depression.
Yes, some people may suffer from a chemical imbalance, but more often than not, you can prevent the onset of depression, or even turn it around if you already have it, purely by changing your eating and exercise habits*.
Several years ago I found myself in a state of depression, bording on “major depression”, and I was thankfully able to claw myself out of the situation, and I am now going to tell you what I did:
- I looked at my diet and I fixed it. I started meal planning once a week, on Sundays I would prep. My food choices were restricted to whole, fresh foods, and each meal consisted of 1 part protein to 2 parts produce.
- I started to exercise. I would work out 30 minutes per day, 3 times per week, and my workouts consisted of strength training and cardio intervals.
These two changes made a huge difference in my life. I had more energy, I felt stronger, I felt happier, and most importantly, after every workout, I felt my mood lift.
Eventually I was able to bring my old self back, and while I let myself down sometimes, I have never dropped into the depths of despair I felt back then.
So if you are feeling down, try making these two changes and observe the changes in your feelings – you may be surprised!
