I came across this story some time ago, and this morning I received some guidance which inspired me to post this.
There is an old story where a hunter had set up a trap to capture monkeys. He set up the trap and placed a banana inside. The bars were far enough apart to allow a monkey’s had to easily slip inside but not wide enough for the monkey to take his hand out while holding the banana. Why is this important?
Well… this trap worked extremely well because a monkey would come along, see or smell the banana, then slip his hand inside and it would grab hold of the banana. The problem for the monkey was that he could not take his hand out of the cage while he was holding the banana but he refused to let the banana go.
To have their freedom, all they had to do was let go of that banana, but instead they held on, allowing the hunter to capture them.
So… this brings me to a question…
What are you holding onto and not letting go of, that is keeping you trapped?
Are you holding onto a relationship, a job, a situation, some ill feelings towards yourself or somebody else?
What would happen if tonight, before you went to sleep, you decided to let that “banana” go? What would tomorrow look and feel like?
What’s the worst thing that could happen? What’s the best thing that could happen?
Stop and think about the bananas you’re holding onto and the possible improvements you could experience in your life if you just let them go.
Would you feel free? Would you feel happier? Would you feel lighter?
If this feels a little scary, start by letting your bananas go, beginning with just one, then another, and then another, and take note of the positive changes that happen in your life as a result. You may be surprised!
