Self-doubt is like that clingy ex who just doesn’t take a hint. It shows up uninvited, and whispers, “Are you sure about that?” and leaves you second-guessing every decision you make. But let me be clear: doubt doesn’t get to drive the bus anymore. You’re in charge now, and it’s time to take back the wheel!
Why Doubt Happens
Doubt sneaks in when you focus too much on what could go wrong. It thrives on uncertainty and loves to keep you stuck. Think about it – how many amazing opportunities have you missed because you let doubt take over? Too many, right? The doubt is not protecting you; it’s holding you back.
The Inner Critic: Your Not-So-Friendly Neighbour
Let’s talk about that inner critic of yours. You know, the one that likes to replay every cringe-worthy moment from the past decade? I LIVE this stuff, and it still happens to me sometimes, so I totally get it!
Anywho, it is now time to tell that critic to get stuffed. Challenge those negative thoughts with hard evidence, such as your wins, your strengths, and your potential. You’ve got more proof of your brilliance than you realise, and it is about time you started to believe it!
Practical Ways to Tell Doubt to Get Stuffed
So, how do you stop the doubt spiral? Here’s how you can get started:
- Catch that critic in the act. When the doubts start, call them out. “Oh, there’s that doubt again. Get stuffed!”
- Focus on your wins. Big or small, a win is a win. Write them down and remind yourself how capable you are. I invite you to do this on a weekly basis, as a tool to remind yourself of how amazing you are!
- Find your “tree”*. I will explain this in a moment, but in a nutshell, it means to surround yourself with people who believe in you—and cut out the ones who don’t.
- Take one bold step. It doesn’t have to be big. Progress beats perfection every time.
*Once upon a time, my husband, Laurie, and I were talking about how much we have changed over the years, and that the number of people we have lots in common with, was dwindling. I said to Laurie, “We need a bigger tree!”, meaning that we need to find more like-minded people to surround ourselves with.
Progress Over Perfection
This is something I say to my clients, over and over again. Nobody has it all figured out – not even me. Even the most confident people have moments of doubt. The difference? They don’t let it stop them. Every step you take—no matter how small—is a victory over that inner critic. And the more steps you take, the quieter that doubt will become. Yay!
